a friend - no matter how close - should realize, respect and be responsible with his role as a friend to another. once you've crossed your own line...the other party may just steer clear and slip away.
if the other party DOES NOT consider you as a part of his family, even if after knowing each other for ages...don't play a role as one, or turn into one.
